Sheriff tax returns, 1788-1791.

Series consists of tax returns submitted to the state treasurer by sheriffs of the various counties in execution of back taxes. All are from the office of Treasurer Hodgdon (1787-1792) and relate to a variety of taxes. Also included is an assortment of fines collected for theft, disturbing the peace, etc. (see: Resolves 1788, c 140, Feb. 17, 1789), as well as correspondence from Essex County Sheriff Bayley Bartlett concerning taxation in that county and the appointment of a deputy sheriff.

Throughout the provincial period, Massachusetts towns were periodically assessed by the Treasury with taxes for the defraying of public charges and support of the government.
